The Ottawa Patent Agency Incorporated is hosting Patents 101 at Algonquin College tonight at 7:30 p.m. The event is to help people learn about the patent system and applications.
Provincial Patent Application is the least expensive patent application, said Kwa. He said after this is filed, companies can comercerize the invention without jepordizing the patent rights.
Kwa said people have to follow up with a non-provisional application within one year of filing the provisional patent application.
"You teach the invention by way of example," said Kwa about drawings of an invention on an application. He said drawing should be able to teach another person how the product works.
Kwa said it is very important to cover the "point of the invention" in great detail.
"The patent system lures inventions into the market so that others can improve upon their inventions," said Kwa.
"Almost all patent offices expect you to get help," said Kwa. He said it is important to get someone who is a certified patent agent.
Kwa says the Ottawa Patent Agency can help people with drafting, filing, searches and special requests. They also do some some pro-bono services for 30 minute sessions.
